OUR SAFRON
THE MOST PRECIOUS TREASURE OF THE ALPS
Unique Cultivation in the Swiss Alps
Our saffron grows in the majestic Swiss Alps at an altitude of 1,400 meters. The combination of clean mountain air, mineral-rich soils, and ideal sunlight creates excellent conditions for cultivating this precious spice. On 7,000m² in Wengen, Berner Oberland, we grow our saffron using traditional methods and without the use of pesticides.
Labor-Intensive Handwork for the Highest QualityS
The cultivation and harvest of saffron require patience and meticulous handwork. From late July to August, in good weather, the bulbs are planted, and each October, the harvest takes place. During the blooming season, each flower must be handpicked daily, and the valuable saffron threads are carefully extracted. Only three saffron threads are harvested from each crocus! From planting to harvest, we place great emphasis on sustainability and respectful interaction with nature. This labor-intensive process ensures the high quality and purity of our saffron..
From Field to Luxury Spice Worldwide
Our saffron undergoes several careful processing steps to develop its full aroma and vibrant color. After harvest, the saffron threads are gently dried and stored in light-proof containers to preserve their freshness. Hand-picking and careful drying are also reasons why saffron has always been a luxury spice. For a long time, it was primarily used in the Arab world and cultivated in Asia Minor to enhance rice dishes. Upon its arrival in Europe, saffron was discovered as a baking ingredient, used in cakes, and became a defining component of paella in Southern Europe. Today, the most famous recipe remains saffron risotto.
Medicinal Properties and Health Benefits
In addition to its culinary value, saffron has a long tradition in medicine. We are particularly interested in the medicinal aspects of this exceptional spice. Saffron has been valued for centuries for its potential health benefits, including mood enhancement, aphrodisiac effects, digestive support, and promotion of eye health. Recent research suggests it may also be used to alleviate menstrual and menopause symptoms. Its effectiveness in treating depression, inflammation, and other health issues continues to be explored. We are committed to preserving and making these valuable properties accessible through our sustainable and careful cultivation (e.g., pesticide-free) and processing.
Versatile Uses
Saffron is not only one of the world’s most expensive spices but also one of the most versatile. Its distinctive aroma and intense color add a special touch to a wide range of dishes. Whether in traditional recipes like risotto and paella, refined desserts, or sophisticated beverages—our saffron brings luxury, flavor, and style to every kitchen.
Sustainability and Responsibility
Our cultivation methods are ecologically sustainable and respect natural resources. We consciously avoid using chemical pesticides and instead rely on mechanical weed control. This approach promotes local biodiversity and maintains the natural balance of our unique alpine ecosystem, allowing the natural strength of our saffron to fully develop.
